Rețele Electrice Dobrogea installed 100 anti-collision diverters on a 15 km segment of the Grădiștea-Iezer Călărași medium-voltage line, located in an area identified by the Romanian Ornithological Society (SOR) as having high bird collision risks with power lines.

Due to the proximity of Lake Iezer Călărași, many bird species inhabit the area. The diverters provided by SOR are specially designed to be visible both during the day and at night, allowing birds in flight to avoid the power lines. These diverters are equipped with reflective plates and luminescent features capable of emitting light for at least 8 hours after sunset.

This initiative is part of the Pelican Way of LIFE project implemented in Romania by SOR, dedicated to protecting wildlife, particularly the Dalmatian pelican and other bird species. Pelican Way of LIFE is the main conservation project for the Dalmatian pelican (Pelecanus crispus) in Europe and globally, aiming to reduce threats to birds and improve their habitat in 27 sites across Romania, Bulgaria, Greece, Ukraine, and the Black Sea.

The installation of diverters will significantly reduce the risk to birds frequenting this area near medium-voltage overhead lines.

Additionally, to protect birds in densely populated areas, Rețele Electrice Dobrogea has initiated a project in Călărași County to install electro-insulating sleeves on the insulators of medium-voltage poles near Pietroiu. By the end of September, over 260 such electro-insulating sleeves will be installed.

Rețele Electrice companies support biodiversity protection and carry out projects in collaboration with specialists and associations dedicated to these causes to protect wildlife in all the counties where they operate. Among the activities to protect storks, in particular, from 2010 to 2024, Rețele Electrice companies have installed nearly 1,000 nesting platforms for this species, with 300 in the Dobrogea area, including Călărași County. These platforms were placed on low-voltage network poles. Additionally, more than 6,000 poles across the country have been equipped with electro-insulating sleeves to protect birds.

Rețele Electrice Dobrogea has installed over 1,500 diverters to date for bird protection in the Danube Delta Biosphere Reserve as part of the LIFE Danube Free Sky project.

The Rețele Electrice companies operate networks with a total length of about 134,000 kilometers in three major regions of the country: South Muntenia (including Bucharest), Banat, and Dobrogea, covering one-third of the local distribution market. They are developing an investment program to improve service quality, safety, and network performance while implementing the PPC group's local environmental standards. The power networks operated by the three Rețele Electrice companies include 289 substations and over 25,000 transformer stations.
