The opening day of Smart City Expo World Congress and Tomorrow.Mobility World Congress 2026 brought together public authorities, technology companies, researchers and experts from around the world in Barcelona, united by a common challenge: transforming cities into smarter, more efficient and more sustainable communities.
InfoMediu Europa and ECOPEDIA are on the ground in Barcelona, taking part in an international press trip supported by EIT Urban Mobility to explore solutions and experiences that could also contribute to the modernisation of communities across Romania.
The first hours spent exploring the exhibition halls highlighted several key trends.
Artificial Intelligence and Urban Governance. Discussions on the AI x Cities and Impact Tech stages focused on how data and emerging technologies can improve public decision-making, optimise infrastructure and enhance the efficiency of urban services.
International Models of Urban Development. Madrid presented its vision, "From Digital to the Sky", while South Korea showcased its strategies for developing smart cities through innovation and digital infrastructure.
Connectivity and Data Sharing. Solutions presented by LoRa Alliance, alongside European initiatives focused on data spaces for smart communities, highlighted the importance of interoperability and digital infrastructure in managing resources and public services.
Cities Designed for People. Discussions at Housing World Summit 2026 addressed major challenges, including housing affordability, tourism pressure and real estate market imbalances, demonstrating that urban transformation goes far beyond technology alone.
Our first takeaway from Barcelona? The technologies already exist, solutions are becoming increasingly accessible, and international experience shows that urban modernisation largely depends on the vision and capacity of public authorities to turn innovation into action.
For Romania, the challenge is not simply to keep pace with innovation, but to turn these opportunities into concrete projects tailored to the real needs of local communities.
Over the next two days, we will continue covering the event, bringing InfoMediu Europa and ECOPEDIA readers insights into technologies, projects and international best practices that could make a meaningful difference in Romania.
